This week is all about Rockabilly, so that means fun, high heels, and rock n' roll! For those of you who are unfamiliar with Rockabilly, here's a mini history lesson (via wikipedia) ...
"Rockabilly" is a term that mixes "rock n' roll" with "hillybilly" and describes both a style of music and a style of fashion that emerged from the Southern United States in the 1950s. The music had influences of rock n' roll, country, swing, and rhythm & blues, and the typical instruments of the style were guitar, double bass, drums, and piano. Some of the most popular artists and bands included Bill Haley, Bill Flagg, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and The Commodores. The popularity of Rockabilly faltered in the 1960s. However, like most vintage fads, there were revivals in both the 1970s and the 1980s. Rockabilly even enjoys steady popularity today as a music subculture and has spawned other subcultures, including psychobilly, gothabilly, and punkabilly. The style of Rockabilly fashion for women emerged from the sweet yet utterly sexy clothing and hairstyles of the 1940s and the 1950s pin up girls. Popular pin up models that have spawned the look of Rockabilly include, Bettie Page, Ingrid Bergman, Marta Toren, and Pamela Green. The look also took influences from Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe. The style is even continued today by celebrities like Dita Von Tease and Gwen Stefani. Rockabilly fashions and hairstyles for men took cues from popular Rockabilly artists like Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley. Also, modern Rockabilly takes influences from modern Rock n' Roll and fun loving Las Vegas, so you'll often find both Rockabilly men and women are tattooed, piereced, and rock vibrant hair colours. Try a backyard barbeque reception or a rustic barn reception under paper lanterns and steamers to harken back to the days of the Rockabilly jamboree!
